TODD REGISTERS FUNNY CAR VICTORY AT SONOMA

J.R. Todd became the first African-American winner in NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Funny Car history Sunday, beating Tim Wilkerson in the Sonoma Nationals. Todd, 35, from Lawrenceburg, Ind., also joined Don Prudhomme as the only NHRA drivers to win at Sonoma Raceway in both nitro categories. Todd won nine times in Top Fuel. Todd beat Wilkerson with a 4.049-second pass at 323.27 mph in a Toyota Camry. Other winners Sunday:

Steve Torrence (Top Fuel), Tanner Gray (Pro Stock) and LE Tonglet (Pro Stock Motorcycle).
