TODD REGISTERS FUNNY CAR VICTORY AT SONOMA

J.R. Todd became the first African-American winner in NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Funny Car history Sunday, beating Tim Wilkerson in the Sonoma Nationals. Todd, 35, from Lawrencebu­rg, Ind., also joined Don Prudhomme as the only NHRA drivers to win at Sonoma Raceway in both nitro categories. Todd won nine times in Top Fuel. Todd beat Wilkerson with a 4.049-second pass at 323.27 mph in a Toyota Camry. Other winners Sunday:

Steve Torrence (Top Fuel), Tanner Gray (Pro Stock) and LE Tonglet (Pro Stock Motorcycle).
