Trades complex after deadline

-

The non-waiver trade deadline has come and gone, but players can still be traded; it’s just a bit more complicated.

In order to be traded after July 31, a player must clear revocable waivers. Waiver priority is determined by reverse standings (worst to best record), and the player’s original club has three options if a claim is placed:

uMake a trade with the club that made the claim within 48 hours.

uLet the player go to the claiming team with no return and all money remaining on his contract goes to the new team.

uPull the player off waivers.

If a player clears waivers, he can be traded to any club — though all players on 40man rosters must clear waivers before being dealt.

The Aug. 31 deadline represents the last day that a player can be acquired and be eligible for a team’s postseason roster.

Trades can occur in September, but players acquired after the deadline are not eligible to play in the postseason.
