ZVEREV BEATS FEDERER
Alexander Zverev, 20, kept his winning streak alive with a 6-3,
6-4 victory against Roger Federer in the Rogers Cup final Sunday in Montreal. Zverev, a winner last week in Washington, D.C., posted a 10th consecutive match victory and ended 36-year-old Federer’s winning streak at 16. The German also tied Federer with a fifth tournament victory this year. Elina Svitolina defeated Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 6-0 to win the Rogers Cup women’s tennis tournament Sunday in Toronto. It was Svitolina’s fifth WTA Tour title of the season. The 22year-old Ukrainian used powerful groundstrokes and a big serve to keep sixth-ranked Wozniacki off balance. Maria Sharapova, a 2017 Western & Southern Open wildcard entrant, withdrew from the competition because of a recurring left arm injury. Sharapova was on the Lindner Family Tennis Center property in Mason, Ohio, on Saturday and was advised by on-site doctors before deciding to pull out.
