Baltimore removed at least four Confederate statues in the wake of violent protests in Charlottesville, Va.

Good idea! Relocate these statues to a place befitting their place in history. I suggest they all be moved to Gettysburg, Pa., where their story can be told in the context of their place in history.

These statues should not be in public parks or worshiped like heroes as if they did something wonderful. As for Trump comparing Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson to George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, well that’s just plain idiotic. It also shows exactly where Trump stands on the issue of equality in America. He stands with Steve Bannon, “Breitbart” and the likes of David Duke.

It gives you an idea of the great America Trump wants to return to — and it’s not pretty. Brian Kindel

Statues and monuments do nothing for me, but does anyone really think that tomorrow morning all of us will hold hands simply because monuments are sent to pasture? Monuments are just stones.

Removing statues, flags and offensive street/school names might feel good and allow some of us to pat ourselves on the back. It might even get some politicians more votes, but ultimately such acts will solve next to nothing. Racism and bigotry are a personal choice, a daily choice similar to choosing each day to love a spouse or a rebellious child. Matthew Lamb

The statues and monuments represent a philosophy of bigotry and racism. The people whom these statues are modeled after fought because they wanted to preserve slavery. Why should that be celebrated? Due to a lack of a workforce to support their agricultural economy, they wanted slaves to provide that labor. Why should that be celebrated? They attacked a U.S. fort. Why should that be celebrated?

Nothing happens overnight, so no, tomorrow everyone will not be holding hands. But it’s a giant step in the right direction. Mike Bigalow
