QWhat new fall shows are you looking forward to? AThere
are a bunch of new series that look particularly promising this year, but I’m most excited for Star Trek: Discovery (Sept. 24, CBS All Access) and The Deuce (Sept. 10, HBO). As a long-time Star Trek fan, I’m excited for the franchise to return to TV, where it is at its strongest, and I’m more excited with every sneak peek and trailer. The Deuce is the new series from The Wire creator David Simon, and it follows the rise of the pornography industry in the 1970s. James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal star.
QAre you excited for Marvel’s The Punisher? AYes
and no. If you haven’t heard of it, The Punisher is another Marvel series premiering on Netflix later this year. (The official premiere date has not been announced.) The character, played by Walking Dead alum Jon Bernthal, was first introduced in the second season of Daredevil, and his antagonizing relationship with the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen was the highlight of an off season for the series. I am concerned that it might be difficult for the Punisher, a violent vigilante and veteran also known as Frank Castle, to sustain a series. The character has been adapted into films multiple times with varying degrees of success.
