Amtrak officials announced Thursday that the constructi­on project that shut down train service in early July at New York’s Penn Station, the country’s busiest railway hub, was completed on time, and the regular schedule will resume Tuesday. The $40 million project replaced tracks at the heart of the station.

Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. — the controvers­ial, Stetson-wearing official who rose to national prominence with his no-holds-barred conservati­ve rhetoric — resigned his office Thursday. Republican Gov. Scott Walker will appoint a successor to Clarke, who was in his fourth term.
