Trump’s reaching across the aisle, as he should be

-

LETTERS LETTERS@USATODAY.COM The circular firing squad that is the

Republican Party has proven it lacks the mettle to govern effectively. President Trump, no conservative and not even a bona fide Republican, was elected to change how things are done, to turn red lights inside the Beltway to green, to give hope to little people like you and me that the federal behemoth can work for us.

Trump is unafraid to reach across the aisle, to challenge the status quo, to invite the slings and arrows of GOP hard-liners. Bully for him!

And if Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi stiff him in December when the deal times out, then we the people will retaliate against Democrats in the 2018 midterms. Paul Bloustein

The so-called leaders in the Republican Party had better take note of the promises that they made to the American voters. So far, they have failed. They quietly pretend to support what the American voter placed in the executive office, but after several months they have accomplished nothing.

Keep going down your pretend support path of President Trump, and the Democrats will take over Congress without one effort to change. Hopefully, those Republicans in Congress will stop playing politics within their own party and get some important legislation done.

This is unreal. I’ve said many times, Trump will destroy the Republican Party. Trump would make a deal with the devil, if it would shine a bright light on him. Democrats better beware, they are dealing with a wolf wearing sheep’s clothing. Len Kivi

Trump is trying to make the GOP jealous, but House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer know exactly what they are doing. Steve Florentz

It’s very commendable to reach out to the Democrats and try to get things done, seeing that the Republicans can’t. At least the Democrats are willing to try, which is more than the Republicans did with President Obama when he reached out to them. But I still can’t trust Trump because he’s too irrational. He’s got something up his sleeve and I can’t figure what it is. He is a pathological liar who can turn on a dime. Democrats better be careful! Bill Mindel

Trump didn’t turn against his voters. Republicans can’t get anything done. Trump is reaching to all sides so we can get things done together as one nation. Maybe he will teach both sides that working with one another will unite us as one, and being split like we have been for years will not work as well. Bryan Sackmann

Trump definitely isn’t a professional politician, so it’s refreshing to see him calling out all politicians both right and left. For better or worse, he did something. Trump worked with those who wanted to make things happen. The best thing that could happen in Washington would be term limits. Now, get to work for the country and don’t mess up. Garth Hogan
