Trump’s deal-making approach is predictable
LETTERS LETTERS@USATODAY.COM Since day one, President Trump’s
supporters claimed that his strength as a leader is that he is unpredictable. Ironically, the opposite may be true.
The reported agreement between Trump, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to extend protections for young undocumented immigrants (under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) and finalize a border security package is a case in point. Why are people — especially Republicans — surprised? In many ways, these moves were perfectly predictable. Trump is, and always has been, predictable.
Trump’s behavior and discourse are predicated consistently on two desires: winning and self-promotion. To those who voted for Trump: Don’t be upset. You asked for it, you got him — Donald J. Trump. Richard Cherwitz

If the Republicans had done their job, it would not have been necessary for President Trump to negotiate with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. But still, it was a good deal for Americans. Gene Washer
I am a Trump supporter, although I don’t always agree with everything he has done. This time, I would say that he put America first before politics. I certainly do not trust Pelosi or Schumer because they have shown that they are very sly. I really think Trump was doing this to make sure that the American people would be taken care of. This was not a time to play the career political games. Randy Weaks
Who would have ever believed it? Trump’s finally proving that he is not a conservative. And Republicans were saying the same thing back before they got themselves stuck with candidate Trump. Sam Osborne
