MAYFIELD, RUDOLPH TOP VOTE-GETTERS
It’s just the first USA TODAY Network Heisman Trophy survey of the season, but right now the favorites are from the state of Oklahoma.
Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield is far and above the early leader, taking 18 of 19 firstplace nods from reporters and editors who work for properties own by Gannett, parent company of USA TODAY. Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph is a solid second. The two will face each other in the state’s annual Bedlam rivalry game at Oklahoma State in Stillwater.
If last year’s survey is any indication, then Mayfield is in a great spot. The first USA TODAY Network Heisman survey of 2016 had Louisville’s Lamar Jackson comfortably at the top. He won the trophy as a sophomore. But on the heels of Saturday’s 47-21 loss to Clemson, Jackson managed only two mentions in this survey. Nonetheless, he leads the nation in total offense at 463.7 yards per game.
Mayfield and Rudolph are in the top 11 of six national statistical categories. And Mayfield has one of the most impressive victories of the season: 31-16 at thenNo. 2 Ohio State.
