Raul Mondesi was sentenced to eight years in prison and fined about $1.2 million for mishandlin­g funds as a mayor of his hometown in the Dominican Republic, according to multiple reports. Mondesi, whose son plays for the Kansas City Royals, had been on house arrest since February as he awaited trial on charges related to allegation­s he defrauded San Cristobal of about $6 million as mayor during his six-year term that concluded last year. As part of the sentence, Mondesi, 46, is barred from holding public office for 10 years. Mondesi, known as El Cañon for his arm, was selected the 1994 National League rookie of the year as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
