Cheap rentals for the Florida-bound

- Nancy Trejos

Rental car firms are offering deals for drivers heading to hurricane-stricken Florida.

Until Oct. 31, Avis and Budget Car Rental will give renters oneway rates from the Northeast to Florida for as low as $5 a day, plus the usual taxes and fees. Hertz has a similar offer for $4.99 a day.

Avis Budget Group estimates that more than 6.5 million Floridians had to evacuate their homes and seek shelter across Florida and nearby states. Many are now returning to their homes, often by driving, and the rental firms hope to shore up the depleted number of vehicles in Florida.

Vehicles must be picked up at a participating Northeast location and returned to a participating Florida location. Rates apply to up to 14 consecutive days.

With the deal from Budget, a full-size vehicle can be picked up at Boston Logan on Oct 7 and dropped off at Miami International Airport on Oct 14 for $104 total ($35 in rental charges, the rest fees). Similar savings can be found in other locations, but cars may not be available for all itineraries.
