COLLINS STEPS DOWN AS METS MANAGER

YANKEES’ NET EXPANSION

Protective netting is being expanded at Yankee Stadium, beginning with the 2018 season. During Sunday’s regular-season finale, the Yankees announced to their fans that the organizati­on planned to “significan­tly expand the protective netting during the upcoming offseason” both at the Stadium and at Steinbrenn­er Field, their spring training home in Tampa.

SCHERZER: JUST A TWEAK

Washington Nationals right-hander Max Scherzer says an MRI on his right hamstring shows he just tweaked it and did not strain the muscle. Scherzer said Sunday that he does not think the leg is- sue is a big deal and that he is able to run. The two-time Cy Young Award winner left in the fourth inning Saturday after feeling something in his hamstring on a change-up. Scherzer said it’s too soon to say whether he would be available able to pitch Friday in Game 1 of National League East champion Washington’s Division Series against the World Series champion Chicago Cubs.

Barcelona’s Spanish league soccer game against Las Palmas went ahead Sunday without fans at Camp Nou Stadium amid a controvers­ial referendum on Catalonia’s independen­ce. Barcelona made the closed-doors announceme­nt with less than a half-hour to kickoff, with thou- sands of fans waiting outside the stadium. Barcelona wanted the game to be postponed, but it said the Spanish league refused.

Brooke Henderson won the weather-delayed New Zealand Women’s Open on Monday in Auckland, finishing off a 3-underpar 69 for a five-stroke victory.
