Yankees win 7-3, force Game 5

- Ted Berg @OGTedBerg USA TODAY Sports

After the Indians’ Trevor Bauer dominated them in the first game of the American League Division Series, the Yankees jumped all over the right-handed drone enthusiast in Game 4 to win 7-3 and tie the series 2-2.

Though Bauer allowed no earned runs in the game, an error by third baseman Giovanny Urshela in the bottom of the second sparked a fourrun rally, capped by a two-run Aaron Judge double. Bauer left the game before the second was over, turning the ball over to the Indians bullpen after allowing four hits and two walks while striking out three.

The Yankees tacked on another run on another Urshela error in the third, but the Indians would not go quietly. The defending AL champs plated two in the top of the fourth on a Carlos Santana homer, and a Roberto Perez blast in the fifth cut the Yankees’ lead to 5-3.

But Cleveland’s defensive woes continued in the bottom of the fifth when a throwing error by pitcher Danny Salazar put Todd Frazier on base. Frazier would come around to score on a sacrifice fly to short center by Brett Gardner.

Yankees starter Luis Severino redeemed himself after his ugly outing in the wild-card game last week. The 23-year-old ace, working with an early lead, kept the Cleveland bats in check over seven innings. Severino struck out nine batters and walked only one, allowing four hits and three runs on 113 pitches.

Indians manager Terry Francona used seven pitchers in relief of Bauer, but only Salazar threw more than 25 pitches and Francona avoided using Andrew Miller.

That should leave Cleveland with plenty of firepower in its bullpen for the series-deciding Game 5 on Wednesday.
