LOVE MOVES UP TO NO. 2 SPOT
Like the College Football Playoff picture, another week of results brought significant change to the Heisman Trophy race.
Penn State running back Saquon Barkley still leads the USA TODAY Network Heisman survey. He was named first by 12 of the 21 official Heisman voters who work for Gannett properties. But his lead narrowed a bit after he was held to 75 rushing yards by North- western, opening the door for other contenders to emerge.
Stanford running back Bryce Love moved into second place, overtaking Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield. Love ran for 152 yards, including a pivotal 68-yard scoring dash, in the Cardinal’s win at Utah to bring his season total to 1,240 rushing yards through six games. Mayfield passed for 306 yards and two touchdowns, but his Sooners were upset by Iowa State.
In addition to the top three, two other quarterbacks of unbeaten teams, Washington State’s Luke Falk and Navy’s Zach Abey, re- ceived first-place votes after only Barkley and Mayfield received firsts last week.
The Iowa State defeat of Oklahoma also earned a couple of mentions for Cyclones linebacker
and occasional quarterback Joel Lanning. Eight players in all received votes in the survey.
