Tears for Fears’ ‘I Love You But I’m Lost’

- Maeve McDermott

Tears for Fears clearly have been paying attention. The band’s upcoming greatest hits collection, Rule the World (out Nov. 10), features two new songs, I Love You But I’m Lost and Stay, alongside enduring classics like Mad World and Everybody Wants to Rule the World. The first new material since their 2004 comeback release, Everybody Loves a Happy Ending, I Love You But I’m Lost sees Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith following the same arc toward cinematic synth-pop as many of their contemporaries, showing that the two ’80s icons can make a glittering rock song that sounds very 2017. That won’t come as a surprise to fans who heard their 2014 covers EP Ready Boy & Girls, which featured Orzabal and Smith covering songs from a new generation of critically adored groups including Arcade Fire and Animal Collective. The rock ’n’ roll teachers have become the students.
