Puerto Rico shouldn’t decline any help

LETTERS LETTERS@USATODAY.COM

Puerto Rico’s governor, Ricardo Rossello, announced that he asked the power authority’s board to cancel the $300 million contract given to the small Montana energy company Whitefish. Addressing Rossello’s reasoning for the cancellation, the Federal Emergency Management Agency said it “has significant concerns with how Prepa procured this contract and has not confirmed whether the contract prices are reasonable.” And, it is important to highlight that the energy company had only two full-time employees at the time. As fishy as the contract and company sound, Puerto Rico is in no position to decline any form of help. The island is still largely without power six weeks after Hurricane Maria. This includes 3.4 million people, not to mention the medical centers and stores only running on generators. Gov. Rossello needs to take the help he can get. Olivia Clarke Jamestown, R.I.
