Kizzire outlasts Fowler in Mexico

-

Patton Kizzire had a four-shot lead with seven holes remaining, right about the time nerves can surface for a player trying to win his first PGA Tour title. Never flinching during a 36-hole Sunday with Rickie Fowler, Kizzire saved par with big putts on three holes on the back nine, closed with rounds of 66-67, didn’t make a bogey over the final 21 holes and won the rain-plagued OHL Classic in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, by one shot to earn his first trip to the Masters.

❚ Kevin Sutherland finally broke through on the PGA Tour Champions, taking the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship — and topping the year-long competition, too. Sutherland closed with a 5-under-par 66 Sunday for a one-stroke victory over Vijay Singh at Phoenix Country Club.

Bernhard Langer shot 64 to tie for 12th but slipped to second in the season standings, missing a chance to win the title for the fourth year in a row and fifth overall. Sutherland, 53, won for the first time in 78 starts on the 50-and-over tour. He entered the week fifth in the Charles Schwab Cup standings.

❚ South African Branden Grace won the European Tour’s Nedbank Golf Challenge by one shot after shooting 66 Sunday and finishing at 11 under par, making a 30-foot birdie putt on No. 16 to take the lead and become the first home winner at Sun City in a decade.
