Steve Bannon to campaign for Roy Moore next week
Steve Bannon will campaign for Roy Moore next week, seeking to give the embattled Senate candidate — who faces several sexual misconduct allegations — an extra push in the final days before the special election.
“I look forward to standing with Judge Moore and all of the Alabama deplorables in the fight to elect him to the United States Senate and send shockwaves to the political and media elites,” the former White House chief strategist said in a statement provided to USA TODAY.
Bannon will join Moore at a Dec. 5 rally in Fairhope, Ala., one week before voters will choose between the Republican judge and Democrat Doug Jones.
The news was first reported by CNN.
As of Wednesday, Real Clear Politics shows Moore has a 2-point advantage over Jones in the lead-up to the election.
Bannon’s confirmation that he will stump for Moore comes days after the White House said President Trump had no plans to campaign for the Alabama Republican.
While Trump has not endorsed Moore, he has said that he doesn’t want another Democrat in the Senate and that Jones winning the race would be a “disaster.”
Bannon backed Moore in the Republican primary over Sen. Luther Strange, who was appointed to the seat in February and endorsed by Trump.
“You are going to see, in state after state after state, people that follow the model of Judge Moore, that do not have to raise money from the elites, the crony capitalists, from the fat cats in Washington, D.C., New York City and Silicon Valley,” Bannon told Moore supporters following the judge’s primary victory.
