The biggest and best-known hut-to-hut network is Colorado’s

10th Mountain Division Hut System, a non-profit that owns 14 huts and manages 20 others, spanning a

300-plus-mile trail network bounded by Vail, Aspen and Leadville.

Stretching between Telluride, Colo., and Moab, Utah, the San Juan Hut System was built for multiday mountain bike treks and now offers skiing on a stretch in Southwestern Colorado between Telluride and Ouray. The eight-person huts have wood stoves for heat, plus cookware and utensils.

In the Pacific Northwest, Washington’s Methow Valley in the North Cascades is home to one of the nation’s largest groomed Nordic trail networks, with more than 120 miles of user-friendly tracks. Five eight- to 10-person huts are equipped with kitchens, cookware and wood stoves.
