Mariners land Gordon from Marlins in trade
In a surprising move, the Seattle Mariners acquired All-Star second baseman Dee Gordon from the Miami Marlins on Thursday. The Mariners also received $1 million in international signing bonus pool money, which they can use to try to lure Japanese star Shohei Ohtani. In return, the Marlins acquired three prospects: RHPs Nick Neidert and Robert Dugger and IF Christopher Torres. With perennial All-Star Robinson Cano stationed at second base, Gordon is expected to move into the outfield, most likely center field. His only experience in the outfield is 13 games in the Dominican League four years ago. Gordon has led the National League in steals in three of the last four seasons. He batted .308 and collected 201 hits and 60 steals in 2017. Trading Gordon was the first major move by new Marlins owners Bruce Sherman and Derek Jeter, who plan to rebuild the organization and trade the face of the franchise Giancarlo Stanton this offseason.
