Frost named AFCA coach of the year for Bowl Subdivision
Scott Frost, who led Central Florida to a 13-0 season that included a victory over Auburn in the Peach Bowl, was named Bowl Subdivision coach of the year Tuesday by the American Football Coaches Association. Frost received the award at a dinner in conjunction with the annual AFCA Convention in Charlotte. In taking his team to a final ranking of No. 7 in the Amway Coaches Poll, he was lured to his alma mater of Nebraska, where he is taking over the football program. Also honored as coaches of the year: Brian Bohannon, Kennesaw State in Championship Subdivision; Pete Shinnick, West Florida, Division II; Jason Mangone, Brockport, Division III; Kevin Donley, Saint Francis (Ind.), NAIA. Matt Campbell of Iowa State was honored with the USA TODAY Coach’s Play Call of the Year for the twopoint version in an upset of Oklahoma.
Jack Lengyel, former Marshall coach and Navy athletics director, won the Tuss McLaughry Award for his service to others. Arkansas legend Frank Broyles posthumously was awarded the Amos Alonzo Stagg award for career excellence. Jenks (Okla.) High School’s Allan Trimble, who is battling ALS, was the AFCA Power of Influence Award.
