Stars take to Twitter

- Erin Jensen

There was outrage aplenty as news spread of the wage gap.

More money for men, more problems.

Many celebrities took to Twitter to express their outrage after learning of the discrepancy in pay Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Williams received for reshooting All the Money in the World.

Three people familiar with the situation but not authorized to speak publicly told USA TODAY Wahlberg received $1.5 million while Williams was paid less than $1,000, the total of an $80 per diem.

Christopher Plummer replaced Kevin Spacey in the Ridley Scott film following a deluge of sexual misconduct allegations.

Here is a round-up of the reaction to the pay discrepancy:

Jessica Chastain

The Molly’s Game star praised her fellow entertainer, telling her Twitter followers: “Please go see Michelle’s performance in All The Money in The World. She’s a brilliant Oscar nominated Golden Globe winning actress. She has been in the industry for 20 yrs. She deserves more than 1% of her male costar’ s salary.”

Patricia Arquette

“Agencies have to stop being com- plicit in the underpayment of their clients,” the former CSI: Cyber star said, adding “There needs to be new language voiding deals made unless all people participate in the favored nations structure.”

Eva Longoria

The Overboard actress echoed Chastain’s sentiments: “Agreed!”

Amber Tamblyn

The Girlfriend’s Day actress slammed the disparity in pay as “totally unacceptable” in a tweet.

Sophia Bush

“Exposing the gross disparity in pay & hard evidence of the gender gap— negotiated by the SAME agents no less! — isn’t a witch hunt. It’s a demand for fair practices,” Bush said in a tweet conveying her outrage. “One person suggesting he step up for a costar, or women in general, is just a suggestion. Not a Putinlevel order.”

Judd Apatow

“This is so messed up that it is almost hard to believe. Almost,” the producerdirector-writer said. “This is how this business works. I wonder if the studio or Wahlberg will do something to make the situation less insane.”

Mia Farrow

“Outrageously unfair- but it’s always been like this,” the actress and activist tweeted. “I was never, ever paid even a quarter of what the male lead received.”

Jemele Hill

The SportsCenter co-host called the moment a learning opportunity. “Lot of lessons here. Always know your worth, being among them,” she tweeted. “I’m not blaming Michelle Williams at all, but this is why women should never feel guilty about being demanding.”

Billy Eichner

The Billy on the Street host knocked the move as “shameful.” “And this is a movie about how greedy and heartless men can be.”

David Krumholtz

The Deuce actor called the wage gap “absolute garbage” and said the industry is a “disgusting business.”

Paul F. Tompkins

The comedian crafted a burn for Wahlberg in his tweet: “Before you condemn Wahlberg for this, consider the level of acting talent he’s bringing to this project, & then condemn him way more enthusiastically.”
