House Republicans pass spending bill to avert shutdown

- From staff and wire reports

House Republicans passed a fourweek spending bill Thursday night that would avert a partial government shutdown, but Democrats appeared to have enough votes to tank the measure in the Senate.

After the 230-197 House vote, the high-stakes spending showdown moves to the Senate, where three Republicans have said they will oppose the House bill, and a majority of Senate Democrats also plan to vote no.
