KitKat goes pink with Ruby chocolate

- Charisse Jones

Candy fans in Japan and South Korea soon will be getting a different taste of their beloved KitKat bars, as Nestle takes the wafer treat and dips it in a new confection dubbed Ruby chocolate.

KitKats coated in the pinktinged, berry-like chocolate will make their debut Friday. It’s the newest taste twist for the candy bar, whose flavors have included Matcha and even sake in Japan, where the candy is wildly popular.

Nestle says it’s the first company to sell Ruby chocolate, a new variety that was unveiled in September and created by Swiss chocolate maker Barry Callebaut.

The limited-edition KitKats, called KitKat Chocolatory Sublime Ruby, will be sold online, in KitKat boutiques and in roughly 80 Japanese pop-up shops that will be open in the lead-up to Valentine’s Day.

KitKats have struck a particular chord in Japan, where the word “kit’’ fits into the candy’s marketing slogan “I know my wish will come true.’’

It’s often given as a token of encouragement, particularly to students preparing to take exams.
