Fighting the gender gap
It’s a great opportunity to touch base with Lipman, whose new book (William Morrow, on sale Jan. 30) examines the gender gap in the workplace. It arrives in the midst of a sexual harassment scandal roiling Hollywood and the media. That’s What She Said presents the case that decades after the feminist movement, women still lag far behind men in pay and opportunity. Much of it is because of “unconscious bias,” or, as Lipman puts it, “We’re all a little bit sexist.” (Even women are biased against women.)
Citing experts and studies and by interviewing men and women in the workplace, Lipman explores why women often feel marginalized on the job. But she is optimistic that things can change if men and women work together.
Years as a journalist
A veteran journalist, Lipman most recently was chief content officer of Gannett and editor in chief of USA TODAY. She began her career at The
Wall Street Journal and was the first woman there to rise to deputy managing editor. After the Journal, she became founding editor in chief of now-defunct
Portfolio magazine.
She also is co-author, with Melanie Kupchynsky, of the 2013 memoir Strings Attached: One Tough Teacher and the Gift of Great Expectations.
Lipman speaks frequently on the topic of women in the workplace and is a winner of the Matrix Award for women in the media.
