Republican leaders in Oklahoma scramble to end teachers’ strike
Thousands of Oklahoma teachers staged massive demonstrations at the state Capitol for the fourth straight day Thursday as Republican lawmakers struggled to bring an end to closures of some of the state’s largest schools.
State House and Senate leaders announced they would take up moneyraising bills Friday.
A bill signed in late March gave teachers $6,100 pay raises. But many teachers said classrooms also need more money, joining a movement that has ignited protests in other GOP-led states like West Virginia, Kentucky and Arizona.
