Manziel back in action

In February, 2012 Heisman Trophy winner and first-round NFL draft pick Johnny Manziel joined The Spring League in hopes of resurrecti­ng a pro- fessional football career that seemed over after Cleveland released him in

2016. On Saturday, Manziel made his pro football return, playing for the South in The Spring League’s opening weekend in Austin. Manziel threw his first pro touchdown pass since December

2015, scrambling to his right to find receiver Antwan Goodley, who dived to complete the touchdown play. Manziel recently participat­ed in the pro days of the University of San Diego and Texas A&M. With his sights set on an NFL return, Manziel expressed interest in playing in the CFL as a possible pathway back.

❚ Former Oakland and San Francisco linebacker Aldon Smith is in jail and being held on $500,000 bond, according to San Francisco Sheriff ’s Department records. Smith was taken into custody Friday evening for violating conditions of his electronic monitoring stemming from a previous arrest. The former allpro had turned himself in to police March 23 after violating a restrainin­g order issued earlier in the month. Online records show Smith is due in court Wednesday.
