Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna was charged with assaulting a woman early Tuesday morning in Toronto, police told The Athletic, and he has been placed on administrative leave by Major League Baseball. In a statement to USA TODAY and other outlets, MLB said: “MLB takes all allegations of this nature very seriously. We are investigating the circumstances and have placed Roberto Osuna on Administrative Leave in accordance with the Joint MLB-MLBPA Domestic Violence Policy.” Jenifferjit Sidhu, a constable of the Toronto Police Service, said they would not release the location or nature of the incident in order to protect the alleged victim. Osuna, 23, is scheduled to appear in court on June 18. Osuna, in his fourth major league season, has nine saves in 15 appearances.

❚ In the wake of his mother’s death Monday after a lengthy battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease, Oakland outfielder Stephen Piscotty has created a YouCaring fund to raise money for ALS research and find a cure. And two big names in the baseball community have been quick to offer their support. Chicago Cubs pitchers Yu Darvish and Jon Lester each donated $10,000 in honor of Gretchen Piscotty on Monday, according to the fund’s list of supporters. As of early Tuesday morning, the page had raised more than $45,000 that will go toward researching amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which colloquially took on Gehrig’s namesake after the New York Yankees’ Hall of Famer died as a result of the condition in 1941. Piscotty took a leave of absence from his former team, St. Louis, shortly after his mother received her diagnosis. The Cardinals traded him to Oakland largely so he could be closer to his mother, who was 55 when she died. The A’s have pledged to match up to $50,000 in donations.
