Hornets to hire Spurs assistant

San Antonio Spurs assistant coach James Borrego is finalizing a deal to become the next head coach of the Charlotte Hornets, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told USA TODAY. The person spoke under the condition of anonymity because the hiring had not been made official. He will replace Steve Clifford, fired last month after five seasons. The Hornets have missed the playoffs for two consecutive years.
