Former NFL coach Knox dies

Chuck Knox, the veteran NFL coach who led the Seahawks for nine years and took the Los Angeles Rams to three NFC Championship Games in a row, has died. He was 86. Knox died Saturday evening, the Seahawks confirmed Sunday. Knox went 186-147-1 during 22 seasons as an NFL head coach, including two stints with the Rams. He won five NFC West titles from 1973 to 1977, and he returned in 1992 for the franchise’s final three seasons in Los Angeles before its move to St. Louis. The Pennsylvania native left the Rams in 1978 for the Bills. After five seasons, he took over the Seahawks in 1983 and immediately led the franchise to its first playoff berth and the AFC title game. He was known as “Ground Chuck” for his run-first offenses.

Billy Brewer, the former Mississippi football star who went on to coach the Rebels to eight Egg Bowl victories over rival Mississippi State, died Saturday. He was 83. Ole Miss released a statement confirming Brewer’s death in Memphis following a brief illness. Family friend Chuck Rounsaville said the former coach had been in poor health for a few months after suffering a stroke this year. Brewer coached Ole Miss for 11 seasons from 1983 to 1993, finishing with a 67-56-3 record. He took the Rebels to five bowl games and had a 3-2 record in the postseason, winning the Liberty Bowl twice and the Independence Bowl once. The Rebels ran afoul of NCAA rules twice during Brewer’s tenure. The second time cost him his job before the 1994 season.

Manchester City hits 100

Newly crowned champ Manchester City became the first club to amass 100 English Premier League points after Gabriel Jesus scored a stoppage-time winner at Southampton with almost the final kick of the season on Sunday. Pep Guardiola’s record-breaking team was headed for a draw until the substitute forward found space to lift the ball over goalkeeper Alex McCarthy in the fourth minute of additional time. Guardiola’s formidable City side completed the season a Premier League-record 19 points ahead of second-place Manchester United. “Everything was perfect this season,” Guardiola said. City set a series of other EPL records: 106 goals scored; +79 goal difference; 32 games won; 16 road wins; 18 consecutive wins.
