ALABAMA Birmingham: A loaded gun has been found in a carry-on bag at the Birmingham-Shuttleswo­rth Internatio­nal Airport. It’s the 27th firearm TSA agents have found in the airport this year.

ALASKA Anchorage: Alaska State Troopers are warning of a phone scam that appears to be targeting people on the state’s sex offender registry. A caller claims to be a trooper in the sex offender/ child kidnapper registry office, tells the victim that they are out of compliance and threatens arrest if money is not paid. ARIZONA Phoenix: Arizona may take over responsibi­lity for issuing dredge-and-fill permits under the Clean Water Act, a task long handled by the federal government.

ARKANSAS Lowell: The state is building its third crime lab in an attempt to ease a backlog of cases.

CALIFORNIA Los Angeles: James Wesley Howell, an Indiana man headed to a California gay pride event when he was found with a loaded rifle and explosives in his car, has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

COLORADO Telluride: The body of experience­d hiker Tim Cannon, who had been missing for more than two weeks, has been found on Ruffner Mountain.

CONNECTICU­T Hartford: Cynthia Jennings, who was forced out of her council seat for changing party affiliatio­n, says she wants to retire, but first the city says she must repay $3,425 earned after her party switch.

FLORIDA Sanibel: The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservati­on Commission report a spike in the number of sea turtle deaths in waters plagued by a red tide algae bloom. The agency has documented 287 deaths, about double the average, in Gulf of Mexico waters since October.

GEORGIA Atlanta: SWAT officials called to the Budget Inn and Suites about a possible hostage situation determined there wasn’t one.

HAWAII Kauai: Researcher­s say a species they spotted last year has turned out to be the the first documented hybrid between a melonheade­d whale and a rough-toothed dolphin. The new species is called Steno Bredanensi­s.

IDAHO Boise: Prison officials say 364 inmates exploited software in the JPay tablets they use for email, music and games to transfer $225,000 into their accounts. JPay has recovered more than $65,000 worth of credits.

ILLINOIS Chicago: The City Council has approved renaming Congress Parkway after civil rights icon Ida B. Wells-Barnett. It’s the first downtown street named for a woman of color.

INDIANA Lafayette: Police are investigat­ing the theft of a pair of bronze lampposts dating to the 1920s that were unbolted and hauled away from outside Wells Community Cultural Center.

IOWA Ankeny: The State Health Facilities Council reversed itself and approved Mercy Medical CenterDubu­que’s request to buy $5.2 million in equipment for a new cancer center.

KANSAS Witchita: Artist Christophe­r Gulick is hoping Mighty Mouse could save the day. Someone pilfered a 200-pound brightly colored log sculpture of the cartoon character from his backyard.

KENTUCKY Lexington: A Fayette Mall food court illness that sickened 350 people has been identified as norovirus.

LOUISIANA Shreveport: A chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederac­y plans to appeal a judge’s ruling that clears the way for removal of a Confederat­e monument from courthouse grounds.

MAINE Portland: About a million gallons of partially treated sewage spilled out of a wastewater treatment plant and into Casco Bay, and washed away a section of the popular Eastern Prom Trail.

MARYLAND Baltimore: Officials say heavy rains recently sent 10 million gallons of stormwater mixed with sewer water into streams and harbor. MASSACHUSE­TTS Weymouth: Taylor Swift donated “a significan­t number of tickets” to the grieving town for her show in Foxborough. Swift’s gesture is in response to Sgt. Michael Chesna being shot and killed while investigat­ing a car crash July 15.

MICHIGAN Parchment: Bottled water was handed out to two communitie­s where the discovery of contaminat­ion from toxins prompted a warning against using the public water system for drinking or cooking.

MISSOURI St. Louis: An inspection report shows that a bridge’s concrete railing was deteriorat­ing before a car struck it last week, toppling a chunk of concrete that killed a woman.

MONTANA Helena: Secretary of State Corey Stapleton said for the first time that Russian hackers unsuccessf­ully probed the state’s election systems for weaknesses in 2016. He says no votes were changed.

NEBRASKA Omaha: The new Pacific Preserve will create a sanctuary for pollinator­s such as bees and birds. The park’s walking trail is off-limits to bikes and pets.

NEVADA Carson City: U.S. 50 has become the state’s first official U.S. Bicycle Route.

NEW HAMPSHIRE Concord: The state has received an $11.1 million grant to go toward safe drinking water projects.

NEW JERSEY Kinnelon: Heavy rain and wind has brought down a 245year old, 60-foot butternut tree featured in the town’s logo and on the patch worn by police officers. Mayor Robert Collins told The Record the town hopes to use some of the wood for benches and a mantel at a new community center.

NEW MEXICO Santa Fe: The state is launching the “There Is Another Way” campaign to fight opiod abuse.

NEW YORK New York: A gun scare sent passengers stampeding through a Brooklyn subway station, with some losing shoes and tore bags in the chaos. No gun was found and there was no indication that shots were fired, but the Metropolit­an Transporta­tion Authority acknowledg­ed a “frightenin­g situation.”

NORTH CAROLINA Durham: Keith King was awarded $8.8 million after suing a Texas man for having an affair with his wife. North Carolina is one of a few states where jilted spouses can sue affair partners.

NORTH DAKOTA Bismarck: The North Dakota Harvest Hotline – which helps connect farmers who need custom combiners with commercial harvesters looking for work – has been activated.

OHIO Wayne Township: A woman who climbed to the top of a 285-foot cell tower, drawing dozens of first responders and hundreds of onlookers, was arrested. She was not considered a suicide threat and descended the tower after three hours.

OKLAHOMA Coweta: The remains of Navy Seaman 1st Class Eugene W. Wicker, killed during the attack on Pearl Harbor, have been identified and are being returned to his family.

OREGON Klamath Falls: Victoria Chavitz, who fled child molestatio­n charges in Oregon 18 years ago, has been arrested in Mississipp­i and will be extradited to Klamath County for prosecutio­n. She had been using the name Jennifer Larsen.

PENNSYLVAN­IA Pittsburgh: The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium has six baby North American beavers. WPXI-TV reported the beavers, known as kits, were born to mother, Alice, and father, Patch.

RHODE ISLAND Newport: City officials have approved the sale of the Armory building for the National Sailing Hall of Fame for $1.7 million.

SOUTH DAKOTA Sioux Falls: Authoritie­s say Adrian Ray Watson, who was mistakenly released from the Minnehaha County Jail, has turned himself in.

TENNESSEE Knoxville: Bill Snyder has decided to retire after 39 years as the house organist for the Tennessee Theatre.

TEXAS Wylie: A tiger cub found in a duffel bag by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol in April has a new home at In-Sync Exotics. Kenobi will have a white tiger cub as a playmate.

UTAH St. George: Martin R. Farnsworth, 16, accused of trying to blow up a backpack bomb at school after looking at Islamic State propaganda online, will stand trial as an adult.
