‘Mrs. Maisel’ is back for more laughs

But ‘good things can’t last’ for intrepid comic

- Gary Levin

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – Like a hot comic, Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” is killing it.

The comedy, about a Jewish housewife in 1958 who becomes a stand-up comedian after her husband leaves, is headed for a second season next winter, in the wake of Golden Globe wins and Emmy nominations.

For Amy Sherman-Palladino, who created the series with husband Daniel Palladino, the world of “stand-up comedy is its own world of desperation and pain and anger. It’s a very tough gig.”

But Midge Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) found success as the first season ended.

“We left Midge in a pretty triumphant moment,” Brosnahan said Saturday at the Television Critics Association press tour. “She’s finally arrived into Mrs. Maisel, the stand-up comedian. I can’t say a whole lot about where she’s headed in Season 2, but good things can’t last long.”

Her ex, Joel, “loves Midge, (but) it’s a huge blow to his ego, because she is talented,” says Michael Zegen, the actor who plays him.

“You’ll see their attempt to co-parent,” as they’ll never be apart completely, Brosnahan says.

The new season is set a year later, and for Sherman-Palladino, best known for “Gilmore Girls,” “there’s a self-imposed nausea that’s always there. Season 2 is big … and we feel like we’ve got, for the first time in our career, we have support from the brass. We have all the pieces to go big or go home. But we haven’t gone home in two years.”
