Opposing view: Nomination turns into an anti-Trump charade

- Andy Biggs Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., serves on the House Judiciary Committee.

Democrats and the radical left promised us, even before the announcement of President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, that they would do anything to prevent anyone he named from ever taking a seat on the court.

This confirmation process is unlike any other in American history. Even during the Robert Bork hearing, the ostensible position of his opponents was that Bork was unacceptable, not that the president was illegitimate. Even the roar of opposition against Clarence Thomas wasn’t that the president’s agenda must be thwarted at any cost, but that Thomas wasn’t suitable.

Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination is unique. Democrats and the radical left stated that their mission was to stop any nomination by President Trump, no matter how qualified, because they hate Donald Trump. They hate the president for the simple fact that he is the president.

The goal of obstructing the president’s agenda has produced a milieu of hatred and prejudice toward Judge Kavanaugh that brings skepticism on anyone who is a detractor of the judge. The environment itself produces doubt about the veracity of any accuser.

Everyone associated with the radical left and their goal to stop President Trump’s agenda is tainted with an un- mistakable bias against the president or anyone associated with him. This particular Supreme Court nomination process has devolved completely into an anti-Trump political charade.

Judge Kavanaugh patiently demonstrated his superior intellect and legal capacity to the senators who attempted to halt his confirmation, demonstrating considerable restraint. We saw his judicial temperament in how he responded to the inanity of Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee. He answered reams of written questions as well.

Judge Kavanaugh has passed six FBI background checks. He has done everything Republicans and Democrats have required of him, and more than almost any other nominee in history.

Judge Kavanaugh is an exceptional choice: a remarkably well-qualified jurist and an exemplary human being.

Because Judge Kavanaugh has demonstrated his veracity and character publicly, and the Democrats have shown that they don’t care about him except as a means to thwart President Trump’s agenda, the Senate Judiciary Committee should quickly hear Christine Blasey Ford’s story in a public hearing, allow the judge to testify in response, and immediately vote.

Judge Brett Kavanaugh should be confirmed.
