Visas continue to be issued to refugees

- LETTERS@USATODAY.COM

The State Department is committed to supporting Iraqi citizens who, at great personal risk, have helped the military and other government personnel perform their duties. Everyone, whether here in Washington or at our embassies abroad, is fully aware of how much we owe them, as well as the risks they face.

There is no ban on refugee admissions for any nationality, and refugees are not subject to the Presidential Proc- lamation on Visas. While there have been some delays associated with increased vetting requirements, visas continue to be issued. Iraqis who have an affiliation with the U.S. in Iraq, including through employment, as well as family members, will continue to be processed through the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program.

We are more thoroughly vetting every refugee applicant, regardless of the job they performed, in order to uphold the safety and security of the American people. That is our first duty, as Secre- tary of State Mike Pompeo has said.

We are grateful for the brave men and women who have served alongside our U.S. forces. Heather Nauert State Department
