Khashoggi’s death haunts any Saudi ties
Nader Habibi, The Oregonian:
“The Oct. 2 disappearance of Saudi Arabian journalist Jamal Khashoggi ... has put a spotlight on the deteriorating relations between Turkey and the Persian Gulf kingdom. ... Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s initial hesitation in pointing the finger ... and his call for a joint investigation gave Saudi leadership time to come up with a response strategy. ... One result of this ordeal ... may be more cooperation ... between the U.S. and Turkey.”
Lindsay Gibbs, ThinkProgress:
“The top two players in men’s tennis, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, (are) scheduled to play each other in the King Salman Tennis Championship exhibi- tion match in Saudi Arabia three days before Christmas. ... Amnesty International warned Djokovi and Nadal that they were being used as pawns by the Saudi rulers. ... It shouldn’t have taken Khashoggi’s murder for those in the sports, business and entertainment world to rethink their relationships with Saudi Arabia.”
The Washington Post, editorial:
“The only way to determine the truth of what happened to Khashoggi is a genuine international investigation, led by a United Nations-appointed panel. ... Congress should launch its own investigation, including of whether the Trump administration is conspiring with Saudi officials to cover up the murder.”
