Former NFLers Gonzalez, Allred among winners
A number of former athletes ran for office in the general election Tuesday. Here is how they fared: Anthony Gonzalez, NFL wide receiver: The 34-year-old Republican defeated Susan Moran Palmer to earn election as U.S. Representative for Ohio’s 16th congressional district. Gonzalez was a first-round draft choice in 2007 by the Colts out of Ohio State. He played five seasons for the Colts. Sharice Davids, former MMA fighter: The 38-year-old Democrat unseated Rep. Kevin Yoder for Kansas’ 3rd congressional district. A former pro fighter, Davids tried out for “The Ultimate Fighter” reality TV show four years ago.
Colin Allred, NFL linebacker: The 35-year-old Democrat unseated 11-term Congressman Pete Sessions in the Texas 32nd district. Allred played four seasons with the Titans after going undrafted out of Baylor. He worked as an attorney in the Obama administration.
Jim Jordan, Wisconsin wrestler and Ohio State assistant coach: The 54-year-old Republican won re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives for Ohio’s 4th congressional district. At Wisconsin, Jordan was a two-time NCAA Division I wrestling champion. Jordan was an Ohio State assistant wrestling coach from 1986-94. His time there recently came under controversy.
Jesse White, third baseman: The 84-year-old Democrat won a seventh term as Secretary of State of Illinois. He has held that position since 1999 — the longest-serving and first African-American to hold the position. White played in the Cubs farm system (1959-66).
Aaron Rouse, NFL safety: The 34year-old non-partisan candidate won an at-large seat on Virginia Beach’s City Council. Rouse played three seasons in the NFL with the Packers and Giants. Adam Greenberg, MLB outfielder: The 37-year-old Republican ran to represent District 12 of the Connecticut State Senate, a seat Ted Kennedy Jr. gave up. Greenberg conceded to Democrat Christine Cohen. As a baseball player, Greenberg is best known for being hit in the head by a pitch in his first plate appearance in the majors in 2005, causing a compound skull fracture. Frank White, MLB second baseman: The 68-year-old Democrat easily won re-election as county executive in Jackson County, Missouri. White spent 18 years with the Royals and was a fivetime All-Star. Napoleon Harris, NFL linebacker: The 39-year-old won re-election as a Democratic member of the Illinois State Senate, representing the 15th district since 2013. He played for Oakland, Minnesota and Kansas City in the pros and at Northwestern. Clint Didier, NFL tight end: The 59year-old Republican won his race for Franklin County (Washington) Commissioner against Democrat Zahra Roach. Didier played for the Redskins and Packers.
