From cringeworthy jokes to tear-jerking speeches, we’ve rounded up highlights from this year’s unpredictable awards show that took place at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson took home the Icon Generation Award, declaring that the “most powerful thing we can be is ourselves.” Jada Pinkett Smith shared similar sentiments while accepting the Trailblazer Award, which she dedicated to everyone who has “trails that are blazed in the hidden rooms of the mind that are full of uncertainty, false beliefs and pain.”
Here are five other moments from Monday’s broadcast, which was hosted by “Shazam!” star Zachary Levi.
Ray J joke lands flat
Awkward! Levi kicked off the awards with some flattery and zingers aimed at the celebrities in attendance. One joke, however, didn’t sit so well.
While introducing “Love & Hip Hop” star Ray J, Levi poked fun at his checkered past. The problem is that Ray J’s wife, fellow reality star Princess Love, was there with him.
“America’s other sweetheart Ray J from ‘Love & Hip Hop’ is here. Although I’m sure some of you are more familiar with his work as a cameraman,” Levi joked, referring to his infamous sex tape with Kim Kardashian more than a decade ago.
Instead of clapping, an unamused Love used both hands to flip off the camera. “I’m sorry,” Levi replied as the crowd groaned. “It was collectively a great idea.”
Sandra Bullock honors her kids
There isn’t anything Bullock wouldn’t do for her kids.
The “Bird Box” star gave a special
shout-out to her two children – son, Louis, 8, and daughter, Laila, 6 – during a touching acceptance speech following her Most Frightened Performance victory.
After joking that the Netflix film was “an educational video on the horrors of parenting,” Bullock revealed that she made the film for her kids, even though they “can’t see it until you’re 21.”
“I wanted you to see what being a family looks like,” Bullock said. “Sometimes you are born into a family. Sometimes you need to go find it. Sometimes it finds you. But no matter how it comes together, that when it does, family is what you fight for. Family is what you protect, and what you saw in that movie is what your mommy would do for you.”
Brie Larson shares the spotlight
Larson didn’t accept the golden popcorn statuette for Best Fight by herself.
She brought Joanna Bennett and Renae Moneymaker, her “Captain Marvel”
stunt doubles who helped bring female superhero to life, onstage.
“I wanted to take this moment to thank the two women standing here beside me,” Larson said. “These are the women who trained me and were also the stunt doubles for ‘Captain Marvel.’ I could not have made this film without them. ”
Bennett thanked Larson for our role in this film.”
“It’s truly a rare acknowledgment and it means so much to the both of us and to the entire stunt community,” she said. Moneymaker called the role an “honor.”
‘Thanks to Lana’s lips’

“To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” co-stars Noah Centineo and Lana Condor took home the award for Best Kiss. While Condor went with a traditional acceptance speech, Centineo kept it short and sweet.
Instead of shouting out his mom or dad, as everyone else does, Centineo took a moment to acknowledge the film’s real MVP: Condor’s lips.
“Thanks to Lana’s lips,” he cheekily said as Condor smirked.
Condor replied: “I just wanted to say thank you to Noah for being an amazing partner. And also, kiss who you wanna kiss, love who you wanna love and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.”
Emotional ‘Surviving R. Kelly’ win
Participants from Lifetime’s “Surviving R. Kelly” became emotional onstage while accepting the award for best documentary.
“This isn’t just a trophy for us, it really speaks to the important cultural impact generated from this documentary,” said Brie Miranda Bryant, Lifetime’s senior vice president of unscripted development and programming. “Six months later we are still standing in this room telling the story, so thank you.”
Bryant was flanked by Asante McGee, Lisa Van Allen, Lizzette Martinez and Faith Rodgers, all of whom spoke out in “Surviving R. Kelly.” The women embraced onstage as Martinez burst into tears.
Bryant concluded: “Because of your bravery, other girls and boys and women and men are now speaking without shame and being heard without judgment. Because of your courage, you created change and you survived.”
