The Royals have a new part-owner, and it’s a face that’s quite familiar to Kansas City, Missouri.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes II, 24, was announced Tuesday as member of the MLB team’s ownership group, the Royals said in a news release.

“I’m honored to become a part owner of the Kansas City Royals,” Mahomes said in the release. “I love this city and the people of this great town. This opportunity allows me to deepen my roots in this community, which is something I’m excited to do.”

Mahomes, the reigning Super Bowl MVP, just signed a 10-year contract extension this month, worth up to $503 million with $477 million in guarantee mechanisms that give the two-time AllPro outs if not exercised.

The winner of the 2018 NFL MVP award, Mahomes led the Chiefs to a 3120 victory against the 49ers in Super Bowl LIV in February.

“We are very proud and excited to have Patrick as our partner in the ownership group of this franchise,” John Sherman, chairman/CEO and principal owner of the Royals said in the release. “Along with the rest of Kansas City, I have watched Patrick compete and become an extraordinary leader, both on and off the football field.”

Mahomes’ father, Pat Mahomes, spent 11 seasons as a Major League Baseball pitcher, with stints with the

Twins, Mets, Red Sox, Pirates, Rangers and Cubs.

The younger Mahomes spent a large part of his childhood with his father in the various MLB clubhouses for which his father played.

“Consistent with the entirety of our ownership group, he has a deep commitment to Kansas City and a real passion for the game of baseball – dating back to his childhood,” Sherman said, before adding that the Royals “look forward to many years of a winning partnership.”
