Seven of eight first-round series set
While four teams vied for a chance at the final NBA playoff spot Thursday, the remaining first-round series were set.
Houston and Oklahoma City will meet in the 4-5 matchup in the Western Conference. Both are 44-27, so their seeding is still technically undecided. But without a true home-court advantage this year, seeding will likely matter very little.
Elsewhere in the West, the Clippers clinched the No. 2 seed Wednesday and a first-round matchup with the Mavericks. The Nuggets are the third seed and will face the Jazz. The topseeded Lakers will have to wait for the results of the Western play-in between the eighth- and ninth-place teams to learn their opponent. The No. 9 team must beat the No. 8 team two times beginning Saturday to advance.
The last two first-round series in the Eastern Conference were also decided Wednesday. The Heat and the Pacers will meet in the 4-5 matchup. Like the West, the two are tied (44-28). The Celtics are the No. 3 seed and will play the 76ers. The series at the top of the East were decided earlier this week: The top-seeded Bucks will face the Magic, and the second-seeded Raptors will play the Nets.
The Trail Blazers entered Thursday eighth in the West, but the Grizzlies, Suns and Spurs were tied a half-game back. On Thursday, the Grizzlies defeated Milwaukee 119-106 to secure at least a share of eighth place, while the Spurs’ record-tying run of 22 consecutive playoff appearances ended after Memphis’ win and the Suns defeated Dallas. The Blazers had to defeat Brooklyn to make the play-in game at the Suns’ expense.
