Tropical Storm Beta floods cars in Houston area
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Heavy rain from Tropical Storm Beta caused Keegans Bayou to overflow Monday night, swallowing cars in southwest Houston.
The National Weather Service in Houston issued a flood warning for Keegans Bayou at 9:41 p.m. Monday. Less than an hour later, video from Houston storm chaser and freelancer Jaime Garcia on Twitter showed an SUV almost underwater and water rising above a nearby pickup.
Beta, the 23rd storm of the 2020 hurricane season, made landfall on the Texas coast Monday night. The National Hurricane Center said up to 15 inches of rain could fall in some areas.
Sunday, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner warned residents that although Beta was not expected to bring rain like Hurricane Harvey in 2017, they should remain alert.
“Be weather aware because things can change. This is 2020, and so we have to expect the unexpected,” Turner said.
There were several reports of flooding across Houston on Monday.
