Sam’s Club extends, gets a jump on holiday sales

- Kelly Tyko

Sam’s Club is the latest retailer to announce it is expanding its holiday sales amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The warehouse club announced Thursday that instead of one-day sales, this year’s sales – including one in November and another in December – will each last nine days.

The Black Friday sale also will be longer at 10 days, instead of four, the duration in 2019, the company said.

Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Best Buy and Bed Bath & Beyond are among the retailers touting earlier deals.

“We felt it was important to give our members a chance to save a lot earlier this season than in the past,” Tony Rogers, Sam’s Club chief member officer, said.

Longer sales give shoppers more time and help with crowd control.

In a survey about holiday shopping plans, Sam’s Club said, 61% of members said they would shop more online this year, and 31% said they would shop earlier than in past years.

Rogers said that in tests, members liked the multiday events because they felt less rushed. He said appliances, furniture and headphones are among popular items.

This will be the first holiday season in which Sam’s Club members can place orders for curbside pickup.
