Jones blasts idea of 2nd Dallas NFL team
The mayor of Dallas says he would like to see another NFL franchise come to the city.
Mayor Eric Johnson hinted that the Los Angeles Chargers, whose sibling owners are fighting for control of the franchise, should pack up and move to North Texas.
With the Cowboys, Mavericks and Stars already occupying the majority of the city’s fan base, and especially with the diehard nature of those Cowboys fans, one person doesn’t think it is a good idea.
That’s Jerry Jones, owner and general manager of the world’s most valuable sports franchise.
“Well, I like the mayor,” Jones said to The Dallas Morning News. “I like him personally, but he doesn’t have the depth. He doesn’t have the knowledge that others have regarding how unique Dallas is and how we enjoy the interest in the Cowboys.
“He wouldn’t want to water that down as it relates to Dallas if he knew as much, and has spent as much time in sports as I have.”
Jones was adamant that another NFL team won’t be coming to
Dallas.
“That’s correct,” Jones said. “That is correct. And you just said it. You can be rest assured that you would not have the NFL supporting another team because of the kind of value that the game and the NFL receives of having (the) Dallas Cowboys as one of its marquee teams and again, logic tells you (the NFL) wouldn’t want to water that down.”
Johnson was told of Jones’ comment and said he liked him personally but his comment was about money.
“No team will ever dethrone the Cowboys – but that’s not the point,” Johnson said. “This region loves football and could certainly support a second team. And as mayor, my job is to grow my city’s economy.”
