Botz Appointed to IAED Mentoring Program
Kalyn Botz, career resource educator at Sheyenne Valley Area Career and Technical Center, was recently appointed as one of 33 mentors from across the nation for the IAED Mentorship Program which stands for Inclusion, Access, Equity and Diversity. Botz will be paired with a mentee, working in education, across the nation to work on special projects and assignments focusing on creating a more diverse and inclusive environment within career and technical education.
The brand-new program will kick off at the annual VISION conference next month – a virtual annual meeting where the mentors and mentees will be
paired and meet. Botz applied for the appointment because she wanted to help teach her colleagues in career and technical education to be more aware of student diversity. “Everyone has a place.” She and her mentee will be meeting once a month beginning in January. The mentees will have assignments and projects which can vary in writing a mission statement for the group to working through scenarios they encountered. “The end result is they can go back to their school and show that we can make changes if necessary or strengthen what we have.”
The funding for career and technical education comes from the U.S. Department of Education. The Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act (Perkins V) was signed on July 31, 2018. Perkins V represents a chance for states to expand opportunities for every student to explore, choose, and follow career and technical education programs of study and career pathways. The IAED Mentorship Program helps achieve the goal of the legislation.
