Valley City Times-Record

Letters To The Editor

-

My son and I headed to Valley City in early December to do some bowhunting on a friend’s land south of town. It was Joshua’s first time with a bow, so he was giddy. We both love the terrain in and around VC because we do not have hills in Fargo, plus for me it is coming home. Joshua saw several deer Saturday morning, although each out of his range. Upon returning to our vehicle we discovered a flat tire. Changing a tire on soft dirt was not something I was looking forward to. Thankfully, a neighbor who was curious about the unfamiliar vehicle parked in the field came out to check on us. He greeted us warmly and happened to have an air compressor to help us to be able to get into town to get it repaired. According to him there was only one place, Bitz Tire and Services, that was open on this Saturday. He was looking out for us.

On a hurried 3- 4 mile drive in to town a car pulled alongside as we approached what is known to me as “Hilltop” to inform us our rear tire was low. One more person looking out for us. When we arrived at Bitz Tire we were disappointed to learn they were closed to do inventory. Now what? Once again, however, a local looked out for us. Owner, Brian Bitz, who I happened to have gone to high school with 30 years prior, broke away from his inventory duties to help replace our

irreparable tire. His business partner, Todd Anderson, and Charlie the dog also took a break so we could all catch up. Fifteen minutes later we were out the door.

What started as a disappointment ended as a satisfying morning meeting and catching up with some folks in a town I love. Pizza Corner was open so we decided 10:45 was not too early to have lunch. Sincerely,
