Finally, We Say Goodbye to 2020

- By Olivia Slyter VCHS Student Correspondent

Finally, the end of 2020 is upon us. After a long and difficult year, the world is in recovery and could be for an extended period of time. While it may seem exciting and necessary to celebrate the end of the year, it’s important to remember that the world is not back to normal yet, and there are still precautions to be taken. It is also necessary to reflect on the year, acknowledging what could be done to make 2021 better.

Though the idea seems riveting and tempting, it would not be wise to spend your last hours of 2020 at a New Year's Eve party or get together of any kind. With the COVID-19 pandemic still thriving, it is crucial that we continue respecting safety precautions in order to protect those at greater risk. These include wearing a mask, social distancing, and staying home. The year

may be ending, but the pandemic is not.

Throughout the year, many things took place that were unrelated to the pandemic, and it’s important to reflect on those things as well. Between the presidential election, the wildfires in Australia and California, the shocking and painful deaths of millions, and so much more, 2020 was packed full of trauma and heartbreak. However, it is crucial to notice the good parts of the year too. Staying connected with friends and family despite not being together physically brought people so much closer. And all things considered, we’ve now made it through an extremely difficult year that we can only hope we don’t have to experience again.

And now here we are, at the end of December, doing what we can to prevent another 2020 from happening. Set your resolutions, flip your calendars, and mask up. Stay safe this holiday season, and here’s to a better 2021.
