VCHS Wrestling and Dance Weekend Recap

The Valley City HiLiners wrestled their way to a 40-29 victory this weekend when they hosted the Jamestown Blue Jays at the Hi-Liner Activity Center.

This non- conference competition pitted some of the state’s best high school wrestlers against one another, and it was highly anticipated: Jamestown edged out Valley City in the State Tournament last February.

Valley City’s Koltyn Grebel, Logan Novara, Koye Grebel and Ethan Miller started the day in the lower weight classes, all four of them cinching wins to put the Hi-Liners up 19- 0. They defeated Jamestown’s Lucas Schlepuetz, Ray Vasquez, Grady Anderson and Pete Rasmussen.

In the next four weight classes, the Blue Jays dominated the mat. Valley’s Tucker Johnson, Isaiah Schuldheisz, Espen Kunze and Evan Mielke were defeated by Blue Jays’ Sam Schlepuetz, Aden Braun, Joel Bowman and Colton Mewes. At that point, Jamestown led 20-19.

Valley City’s 160-pound powerhouse Ezra Hanse got the momentum back for the HiLiners when he pinned Josiah Reimers. His victory was followed by Broden Muske’s pin of Preston Gall, which put the Hi-Liners ahead of the Blue Jays 31-20.

After Jamestown’s Ben Matzke defeated Valley’s Jonathan Redfearn, Hi-Liner wrestler Jonah Schuldheisz pinned Dareeyn Davis at 195 to propel Valley City to a 37-23 lead. The blue and white wasn’t done yet, though, and extended their lead thanks to Carson McGough’s pin of Austin Kessler.

The final score was determined by the 285 matchup between Blue Jays’ Damien Krebs and Hi-Liners’ Devyn Thornton, where Krebs was victorious.

Valley City ended the day with a nice 40-29 win, moving to a 4- 0 record this season. Jamestown falls to 0-2.

Valley City continues the season at Grand Forks Red River tonight (Jan. 5) in an Eastern Dakota Conference Triangular. They’ll face the Rough Riders and West Fargo Sheyenne.
