Hi-Liner Boys Victorious Over Red River

- By Olivia Slyter VCTR Student Correspondent

Valley City boys’ basketball team faced off against the Red River Roughriders in the HiLiner Activity Center Tuesday night. It was a close, well-played game by both teams, but there is only one winner, and, in this case, the Hi-Liners were victorious.

Jared Eggermont started out the game, not only winning the toss-up, but also scoring the first basket, putting the Valley City Hi-Liners on the board.

The Roughriders were close to follow, though, scoring a 3-point basket only seconds later. That definitely was not their last three-pointer either, Red River scoring mostly three-point baskets throughout the first half. By the time there was ten minutes left in the half, the score was up to 15-16, with the Roughriders barely in the lead. Both teams played aggressive defense, ending the half with a total of nineteen fouls total: nine from Valley City, and ten from Red River, causing a long first half. After losing grip of the lead for the remainder of the half, the Hi-Liners lessened the gap, finishing the half 33-34.

The Hi-Liners started with possession in the second half, but the Roughriders were the first to score with yet another three-point basket. They were playing rough, fouling Valley City seven times within the first five minutes of the half. Peyton Zaun and Jared Eggermont both helped Valley City gain the lead momentarily, with a threepoint basket from Zaun, closely followed by two points from Eggermont. From this point on, it was a constant back and forth between the teams throughout the rest of the game until the Hi-Liners were ultimately successful in one of their overall closest games of the season. Peyton Zaun saved the day, scoring a buzzer-beating threepoint basket that barely put the Hi-Liners in the lead. The final score was 69- 68.
