Down two skaters with less than four minutes to play in a 1-1 game, the Jamestown High School boys hockey team was in trouble Tuesday night at Wilson Arena.

But staring the improbable in the face, JHS sophomore forward Nolan Nenow broke loose scoring his team-leading 19th goal of the season during a 5-on-3 Mandan power-play with 1 minute, 58 seconds remaining in the third period.

Jamestown defeated Mandan 2-1 and, coupled with a Bismarck Century 2-1 win over Bismarck, locked up third place in the West Region regular season standings. The Blue Jays will host sixthseeded Bottineau-Rugby on Feb. 16 at Wilson Arena in a West Region tournament quarterfinal at 5 p.m.

"Don't be a fool if I didn't tell Nolan if he was 1-on-1 with somebody to skate around him and score," said Jamestown boys hockey coach Matt Stockert during an interview with 107.1 FM in Jamestown. "Not once, but he did it twice."

Nenow managed to find a pair of breakaways during the 90 seconds of 5-on-3 hockey, but Mandan senior goalie Zane Clausen denied the sophomore's first attempt. Clausen played an outstanding game, stopping 47 shots fired on goal by the Blue Jays.

"Thankfully the second one decided to go into the net," Stockert said. "He put a nice move on the goaltender, made him commit, pulled the puck to the side, and shot it into the net and the Jays won 2-1. That's all that matters."

Clausen made 36 saves for the three-win Braves (3-12-0-0) in Jamestown's prior 2-0 victory against Mandan on Jan. 12. The netminder entered the night stopping pucks at a clip of 92% and was good on 96% Tuesday night, as Jamestown went 0-for-3 on the power play.

Jamestown scored early, striking just over three minutes into the first on Jace Thompson's 17th goal of the year off an assist from Nenow. Mandan leveled the scoreboard at 9:13 in the second when Olin Halstengard buried the game's first short-handed goal, as Jamestown outshot the Braves 17-8 in the second but began the third tied at 1-1.

Jamestown outshot Mandan 49-28 all told and limited the Braves to five quality scoring chances.

"That's two games in a row we've put 40-plus (shots) on goaltenders," said Stockert, whose Jays put 40 shots on net during last Thursday's 4-1 loss at Bismarck Century. "But I told the kids in the room, eventually at some point in time, the hockey gods are gonna say, 'Ok, that's enough,' and the flood gates start opening up. What a perfect time for the flood gates to start opening starting Thursday and into next week?"

Jamestown will finish the regular season Thursday facing the Bismarck Demons in Bismarck in a game that cannot affect Jamestown's position in the West Region tournament seeding.

Bismarck lost to Century 2-1 in overtime Tuesday night, while Minot moved three points ahead of Century for the top seed with a 5-2 win over Williston. Century could tie Minot in points if they earn three with a win Thursday hosting Hazen-Beulah. Minot defeated Century 5-4 on Jan. 5, but the Patriots bounced back with a 6-4 win against the Magicians on Jan. 19.

Bismarck is three points ahead of Williston for fourth. Williston is at three-win Dickinson on Thursday.

"Bismarck High will have a little sour taste in their mouth and they're better from when we played them in the first game of the year this year," Stockert said. "That seems like a long, long time ago."

Jamestown defeated Bismarck 5-3 way back on Dec. 15.

"I know they're a better hockey team than they were back then, as are we, and I think it's just important to play a good hard hockey game over there in Bismarck on Thursday."

Jamestown goalie Brode Hillstrom made 27 saves Tuesday against the Braves, including 11 in the final period.

"Mandan, they're a gritty team. They pack it in tight and they do a good job of making you work for goals," Stockert said. "But by all accounts, we deserved to win the hockey game."
