In the midst of chaos

- Troy Gunderson Troy Gunderson Youth for Christ International, Jamestown, ND

When one perceives all that is happening in the world around us, it can seem everything is out of control. But if we look closely at the Christmas story we can see how God’s promises were fulfilled even in the midst of chaos. Of course, God knew how these events would unfold and even gave us hints in His Word. Yet we still find it difficult to perceive how all these things could possibly work together for His glory.

I expect there was some confusion for Mary as she contemplated the angels revelation to her, for I’m sure she knew what the prophet Micah said, “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.” Yet, Mary chose to trust.

She had no idea that Emperor Augustus would issue a decree that forced her and Joseph to Bethlehem. Can you imagine the disorder of it all as thousands of people had to travel to their hometowns at the same time. I wonder if a smile came across Mary’s face when she heard the order. In that chaos God’s Word was fulfilled.

Another example of this is found in Hosea 11:1 “When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son. If Jesus was to be born in Bethlehem how then could He come out of Egypt?

Again, just as God had foretold, the evil of man’s heart forces God’s prophecy to be fulfilled. King Herod orders the death of male infants under two years of age and Mary and Joseph flee to Egypt to escape the wrath. When the danger is over the young family returns to Nazareth where it all began. In doing so, Jesus, without any authority in the matter, fulfills all the prophecies regarding His entrance into the world.

Yes, man makes a mess of things and evil seems to be prevailing at times. But rest assured, God knows our chaos and His plan has accounted for it all. His plans will always take shape and His prophecies will come true.

It seems easy to look back at how God’s prophecies came true. It’s much harder to discern in the moment. But I pray you also understand that God has promised His Son’s return. What if the chaos in the world today is part of that prophecy. Are you ready for His return? I pray you are. Regardless of when He returns, let’s rejoice in a Savior who came and is to come.

Merry Christmas and happy New Year.
