Hi-Liner boys and girls fall in EDC play-in games, ending season

Boys: Fargo Shanley 78, Valley City 60

Valley City and Fargo Shanley just played four days ago with the Deacons win 71-57. In that game, Valley City jumped out to an early six point in the first two minutes of the game. Saturday they met in the Eastern Dakota Conference tournament play-in games and Shanley was not going to let what happened four days ago, happen again. The Deacons used a 10-0 run and started of the game on a 12-3 run to take the early lead and never looked back on the way to a 7860 win, ending the HiLiners season.

The Hi-Liners did take an early lead when Zach Sykora made a threepoint­er to give Valley City a 3-2 lead. But a three-pointer by Alex Wheelock moments later gave the Deacons a 5-3 lead, a lead they would not give up. That basket started the 10-0 run to open up the nine point lead at 12-3. A three-pointer by Kaden Christmann capped the ten point run.

The Hi-Liners would get the lead to down to five points. Arie Bratrud rebounded his own miss and scored to make it 127.

Shanley would then go o a 16-4 run. It was started by Connor Kraft’s three-pointer to make it 15-7. Then ended when Jett Wolf scored inside to make it 28-11 Deacons. Part of that run, Shanley scored twelve straight points. That run was end by Aiden Jacobson bucket inside to make it 28-13.

The Deacons would score the next five points to make it a 20 points game at 33-13. Bratrud ended that run with a bucket inside to make it 33-15 with 4:20 to go in the half.

The two teams would exchange baskets the rest of the way to make it 37-19 Deacons at halftime.

Both teams offenses were in high gear in the second half. Like the first half, the Deacons would score first on a two-pointer, then Valley City would counter with a three. Jacobson’s three-pointer made it 3922 early in the second half.

Shanley would go on an 11-2 run to open up its biggest lead of the game, 50-24 just about three minutes into the second half. Arie Bratrud, who had just checked in, scored down low to make it. 50-26.

Valley City would get the lead under 20 with a 9-2 run capped off by Jacobson’s basket to make it 54-35. After Shanley got the lead back to 25 with a 10-4 run, Valley City countered with a 12-0 run themselves to cut the lead to 13. A midrange jumper by Jacobson made it 6451 Deacons with 5:15 remaining in the half. Kraft’s basket inside ended the run and gave the Deacons a 15 point lead at 66-51.

Shanley would call a timeout with with 4:29 to play. Coming out of that timeout, Jacobson hit another midrange jumper to make it 6653. That would be as close as the Hi-Liners would get the rest of the night.

Shanley Went on a 6-0 run to regain a 19 point lead, 72-53. Bratrud’s basket underneath ended that run to make it 72-55.

Aiden Jacobson led Valley City with 24 points. Zach Sykora had twelve points and four steals. Arie Bratrud had ten points and a team high seven rebounds. Carver Pederson had eight points and Carson Eggert had a free throw and three assists.

With the loss, Valley City’s season ends with a 2-20 record.

Hi-Liner girls game ended with West Fargo Horace winning 63-51.

Valley City was led by Brooke Eggermont with 16 points.

The Hi-Liners season ends with a 6-16 record.
